How we are funded

The short version — we are not in any affiliate programme, so we earn nothing whether you buy or not. The longer version explains what the buttons on this site do and what will change if that ever stops being true.

Updated 5 September 2026

The current position, plainly

As of 5 September 2026, Solar Power Auditor:

  • is not a member of the Amazon Associates programme or any other affiliate programme;
  • earns no commission from any link on this site;
  • carries no display advertising of any kind;
  • has no sponsored posts, paid placements, paid reviews or brand relationships;
  • has received no free, loaned or discounted hardware from any manufacturer.

There is no revenue attached to this site at all right now. That is an unusual thing to publish, so we would rather publish it than have you assume the opposite.

Then why are there "Check price" buttons?

Because a reader who has decided which unit they want should not have to go and find it themselves.

Each product button goes to Amazon. Where we have confirmed the exact product listing, the button goes straight to that listing. Where we have not been able to confirm the right listing with confidence, the button goes to an Amazon search for that product name instead — because sending you to a nearly-right product is worse than sending you to a search box.

These links carry rel="nofollow" and open in a new tab. They carry no tracking tag, because we do not have one.

◇ Why
Affiliate revenue is the standard business model in this category, and it creates a real pull toward recommending whatever pays best. We are not claiming virtue here — we are telling you the pressure does not currently exist, so you can weight our conclusions accordingly.

What happens if we do join an affiliate programme

If that changes, all of the following happen at the same time, before any commission is earned:

  1. This page is rewritten to say so, with the date.
  2. The notice at the top of every page changes to disclose the commercial relationship.
  3. Every affected link gains rel="sponsored nofollow" and the programme's required disclosure appears site-wide.
  4. Existing scores are not revisited. The rubric and the underlying third-party measurements do not change because our funding did.

The site is built so that this is a single configuration switch, and the build refuses to publish if the disclosure language and the actual link behaviour disagree.

What we will not do

  • Accept payment to review, feature, rank or score a product.
  • Accept free or loaned hardware without disclosing it on every page it appears.
  • Let a commercial relationship change a score, a ranking or a verdict.
  • Run display advertising, pop-ups, or newsletter list rental.
  • Publish a "best of" list whose order is decided by anything other than the published rubric.

Prices

We do not quote street prices. Prices in this category move constantly and we have no live price feed, so a price we published last month would be wrong today and you would have no way of knowing. We publish the manufacturer's list price with the date we checked it, and we keep it away from the buttons. For what you will actually pay, check the retailer.
