Cheap and good value are different things
The cheapest power station on this page costs $330. It is also, by a distance, the worst value on this page.
That is because price alone tells you nothing. The useful figure divides the price by the energy a laboratory actually measured coming out of the unit — not by the rating, which overstates it by 7% to 25%.

The C1000 Gen 2 is the highest-scoring unit on this whole site, and it costs $499.99 on Anker's own store.[2] It returned 87% of its rating — joint-best in its class — puts out 2,000 W, and recharged in a measured 56 minutes.[1]
There is no budget compromise here at all. It is simply the best unit in the 1 kWh class and it happens to be the cheapest of the four.
Its only real limitation is that it does not expand.[2]

$359 for 690 measured usable watt-hours works out at about $0.52 each — the cheapest energy on this site.[3][4]
It is also the only budget unit that expands: a B80 battery takes it to 1,574 Wh.[4] And StorageReview measured its UPS transfer at 14 ms against a 20 ms specification — a manufacturer claim that was beaten rather than missed, which is unusual enough to note.[3]
Two caveats. Its 1,000 W output rules out kettles, heaters and most power tools.[5] And its measurement comes from StorageReview under a lighter load than OutdoorGearLab uses, so the percentage is not directly comparable with the other units in this table.

910 measured usable watt-hours is the most of any unit under $600, in the lightest box in its class at 24.4 lb.[6]
At $0.61 per usable watt-hour it is slightly worse value than the Anker, and you give up output (1,500 W against 2,000 W), solar ceiling (400 W against 600 W) and cycle retention (70% against 80%).[7][2] Buy it over the Anker only if carry weight is genuinely the deciding factor.
Where the budget money goes wrong
Buying too small. The single most expensive mistake in this category. A 288 Wh unit that cannot run your fridge is not a cheap power station; it is a $330 phone charger. Work out your actual load first with our sizing guide.
Buying on rated capacity. Two units both advertised as 1,024 Wh delivered 890 Wh and 870 Wh in the same laboratory.[1][8] The rating gave no way to tell them apart.
Buying the previous generation by accident. The Anker C1000 Gen 1 is a different product with different figures and is still widely listed, including renewed. EcoFlow sells three concurrent 1,024 Wh products called Delta 3.[9]
Assuming a sale price is a discount. Several units in this category carry permanent "sale" pricing against a list price that nobody pays. We publish the manufacturer's own current figure and the date we checked it, and nothing else.

What is the best cheap power station?
The Bluetti AC70 at $359 offers the cheapest usable energy on this site, about $0.52 per measured watt-hour.[3] The Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2 at $499.99 is the better overall buy — 29% more money for 29% more energy plus twice the output.
How do I compare value between power stations?
Divide the price by the independently measured usable capacity, not the rated capacity. The rating overstates real energy by between 7% and 25% depending on the unit, and the gap is not consistent between brands.
Are cheap power stations worth it?
The mid-sized ones, yes — the $350–$550 band is where cost per watt-hour is lowest. The very small ones are poor value: an Anker SOLIX C300 costs nearly three times as much per usable watt-hour as a C1000 Gen 2.[10]
Is a $700 power station enough for a power outage?
For a refrigerator, yes — about 17 hours from a 1 kWh unit. For a fridge plus lights, router and phones at roughly 250 W, only about 3.5 hours. If your outages run longer than a night, budget for the 2 kWh class.
What is the cheapest unit that will run a fridge overnight?
The Bluetti AC70 at $359, which gives about 15 hours of a 12 V camp fridge or roughly 13 hours of a full-size household one. Below that capacity you are not covering a night.
Spend $500, not $330
The best budget power station is the Anker SOLIX C1000 Gen 2, and it is not a compromise — it is the highest-scoring unit on this site that also happens to be the cheapest in its class.
If $500 is too much, the Bluetti AC70 at $359 is the cheapest usable energy here and the only budget unit that expands.
What you should not do is buy at the very bottom. The Anker SOLIX C300 is a fine nine-pound box for phones and a laptop, but at $1.43 per usable watt-hour it is the most expensive energy on this page, and it will not keep food cold for a night.
